Helluva Boss Season 3, ep. 4 and 5

This show isn’t fun anymore

Many people argue about whether or not the show got worse as it moved away from the fun assassination missions to focus more on the drama between Blitzo and Stolas. While the show isn’t fun to me anymore, the shift in focus was not the reason. The writers clearly don’t care about crafting a well spaced out story anymore. Blitzo and Stolas’ relationship isn’t the problem, but the random instances of flippant and spiteful writing is.

Episode 4

This episode has the characters border-line making fun of the audience, and it is not subtle. I’ve always had a problem with writers poking fun at the their show’s fandom or haters. It usually just comes off as mean spirited and unprofessional, even if the depictions are accurate. Moxxie and Millie having the Stolas vs Blitzo debate was not needed, and didn’t even add decent comedy. Blitzo repeatedly talking about Stolass hookups got old quickly. There also wasn’t much difference between Blitzo’s insults and his serious attacks. The way Blitzo talks feels relatively the same, with the only difference being the background music. Finally, the ending was abrupt and made the trial feel pointless. The only thing that was stopping Stolas from ending the case earlier was Blitzo’s constant interruptions. The stakes of the trial and the relationship drama were barely related, which made the episode feel unbalanced.

Episode 5

I’m almost fully convinced that Vivziepop is just screwing with us now. To have an episode where Stolas and Blitzo finally talk out their emotions, only to follow it up with Stolas ignoring Blitz’s efforts in the following episode, was a detrimental writing choice. It unintentionally pushes a classist message that makes it impossible for Stolas and Blitzo to fully understand each other. The whole episode shows that Stolas could easily forget about Blitzo if he had his class status back. Stolas is visibly happier when talking with Vasago, and he dismisses Blitzo as another servant. This pushes the idea that even if a rich person loses their money and status, they will still be automatically cruel and uncaring towards someone of a lower class. This hurts because even hard core fans of the show can’t excuse how quickly this episode trampled the previous one. Even as a casual fan, I am extremely frustrated with the lack of severity the writers are treating Blitzo and Stolas’ relationship. Blitzo going on the heist for the locket was undermined by and Vasago getting the job done on his own. This makes if feel like flashback and song were only there to stretch out the run time, while Blitzo and his efforts are invalidated.

Closing thoughts

Honestly, I’m not sure if I want to keep watching the show if the writers are not going to put any time into showing lasting growth. The lack of respect for the show’s own characters almost feels intentional, and leaves me with a sense of dread for the next episodes. I do not want to see these characters’ arcs be thrown around like ragdolls. If the show can’t stick with any developments for more than one episode at a time, there really isn’t a point in watching. As someone who has defended this show for a long time, I am really sad about this pair of episodes.
