Dinner With a Demon

Poem by Rock Candy

The table was set, nothing fancy,

but it was the event of the season.

The once a year visit, yet so unpredictable,

was beginning again.

“Long time, no see.”

“You’re with me daily.”

“Yes, but you still deny my existence.”

“…”

The gall of them both.

It was practically comical.

“So. Which lie will you lead with this year?

Or have you finally exhausted that little head of yours?”

“I’m sick of lying. You wouldn’t understand.”

“Oh, but I do. Life, love, laziness. The one thing they all have in common is that they’re lies we tell ourselves.”

“I’m not lazy. Can’t you see all the work I put into this feast?”

“For undercooked emotions that no one can save you from. Tell me, what good does this do for you or anyone else in this world?”

“At least I didn’t trouble others for it. I did it myself, and-“

“And for me?”

“…”

Everything was still hot.

Ready to be indulged in, until nothing remained.

However, hesitation,

tied them both to their chairs.

“These creations of mankind, what could be a better form of torture? Haha!”

“This is why I don’t have guests over…”

“Then why do you keep trying to face me?”

“Because I have to heal from you. I have to!”

“Says who? The people who birthed you? Or you, who birthed me?”

“Does it matter if it’s the truth?”

“Does truth mean anything at all if spoken only by hypocrites?”

“…”

A sudden clank of silverware,

A sudden snap of wood,

Glass breaking and the unmistakable pounding of fists,

“I HATE YOU!”

With every blow, more food fell onto the floor,

Splattering like blood, in ugly patterns.

But only the aggressor was bleeding.
