No matter how much people try to deny it, there is a tiny grain of truth in some stereotypes. This, of course, doesn’t excuse any mistreatment based on said stereotypes. Not to mention people who fall into some stereotypes are not automatically terrible individuals. In fact, I feel that people who are genuine enough to wear all their aspects, regardless of stereotypes, are ironically unique. Let me explain this a bit more.
Many people see stereotypes as something to avoid like the plague. I, as an author, have racked my brain worrying about if my characters resemble any type of stereotype for better or worse. However, in real life, people’s personalities as they are should be more important. For instance, if a person really like pop music, and fit the stereotypes of a person that likes pop music, it shouldn’t be a problem. I would actually give a lot of credit to a person who is unafraid to like what they like, even if some would think less of them for it.
It is hard to find people these days that don’t feel the need to perform a different aura, or persona, just to feel safe and well liked. When people are willing to be themselves, to a healthy and respectful degree, it truly is a rare event. It is something I am trying to work on in myself, and something I look for in friendship as well.
