Game Over

Poem by Rock Candy

Plug in, and be born,

And I could’ve sworn,

I had the start up code memorized,

But I’ve only just started,

This is my first game,

But with every mistake, I take the blame,

There is no tutorial,

So I just copy what I see from others,

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, and… start!

But nothing’s working,

The other players never told me that certain rules only apply to certain people,

They also never told me who made this game so unfair,

Suddenly, the screen lights up,

And a world is at your fingertips,

It’s time to explore, it’s time to get stronger,

But enemies lurk around every corner,

Level 1, you crawl, but you can’t communicate,

You wander aimlessly until someone points out how stupid you look,

You hear commands from every direction,

Your main mission awaits,

Forget the side quests, right?

Because you must complete the game, 100%, just like everyone else,

But how can you get every achievement, when the goals keep changing, multiplying,

The game isn’t fun anymore.

Did I mention you are under a time limit?

Every second that passes, your health points decrease,

And no amount of items, cheats, or weapons can prevent it,

Suddenly, before you know it, you’re at the final boss!

But you are still at level 1,

You have the strength of an infant, the magic of mortal, the speed of snail, and the defense of an abused child,

The controller is vibrating in your hands,

Or maybe it’s just your hands shaking, due to the anxiety of life itself,

And the realization that this life is your one and only,

You can’t reset, you can’t save and come back later,

Everything has led up to this moment, and you’re still not ready,

Your choices affect the story’s outcome,

But everyone around you has been making sure,

Those decisions were never really your own,

You’ve been played by the game of life,

And now it’s game over.
