When I was growing up, one could say that my parents were overly strict. At that time, I didn’t really care, but then, social media started getting popular.
My parents immediately said “not until you’re eight teen”, and that was that. My only exposure to it up until that point was from what I saw of my peers, and the t.v. shows I watched.
This would have been a good thing, if it wasn’t for the fact that it isolated me from the people in my age group. While others were learning how to take good photos, and edit videos, I found myself getting left behind.
Now that I am older, and social media has had its ups and downs, using it is still very difficult for me.
Despite the fact that it’s called social media, I always seem to annoy people by trying to make friends through it. Whether it’s a rude comment or people ignoring my friend requests, I never seem to get it right.
Many people have expected me to follow them, and keep up with their posts, while they refused to engage in my content at all. I’m not looking to be an influencer, but it still hurt when I thought their was a chance to make a new friend, and the other person was not willing to meet me halfway.
This is why I chose to use social media mainly for myself. It is my way of making memories, and documenting my progress in life. If someone happens to enjoy my event posts or likes a joke I told, that’s all great. However, I don’t get my hopes up to make any meaningful connections with others.
I wish I could have had a better experience with social media, but at least it taught me a little about myself. It helped me figure out how I like to communicate and interact with others.
