What a wish costs

Daily writing prompt
You have three magic genie wishes, what are you asking for?

Ever since I watched the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I’ve approached the concepts of wishes differently. The idea of anything coming for free is nice, but rarely ever true. The show explores this dilemma in a very interesting way, and made me think about what I would wish for in my best headspace as opposed to my worst headspace.

If I could actually make wishes with no consequences, I’d probably wish for world peace. (Cliche, I know.) But that wouldn’t erase people’s hatred and grudges towards each other. Simply wishing away bad feelings would have bad results as well, probably. So, worldwide wishes might just be too dangerous.

Wishing for myself could be seen as selfish, but wishing for friends and family could be seen as disrespectful. You never really know what another person wants, and trying to take matters into your own hands can easily backfire.

I guess I’d try and stick to small, seemingly harmless wishes. For instance, wishing for a one day of good weather, or to become fluent in a different language.
