Helluva Boss season 2, episode 8, was good. So, why do I feel so underwhelmed…?

Helluva Boss episode review

Despite the fact that this episode confirmed so many fan predictions, and tied up so many loose plot threads, there felt like there was something missing from this episode. The reason for this has to do with the fact that we did not learn anything that we didn’t know beforehand.

We already knew that a fallout between Blitzo and Stolas was coming. We already knew the Cherubs were coming back for revenge. Even the Dohrks making another appearance was expected. There were no new locations, plot relevant characters, or interactions that were outside the norm.

Most of all, the series focused on two major plot points that should’ve had their own separate episodes. The Cherubs trying to kill Blitzo didn’t serve any purpose other than to confirm their goal of getting back into heaven. There was nothing about their dynamic that changed or deepened from the last episode they were featured in. Collin is still the punching bag of the group, while the other two are just prudes.

On the other hand, Blitzo refusing to acknowledge the issues in his relationship with Stolas is nothing surprising either. The dirty jokes got old by the time the opening song was over, and the ending argument was just the nail in the coffin. It was well written and very emotional, but because it was so disconnected from the rest of the events of the episode. The only real connection was the rest of I.M.P jumping the Cherubs. Even then, we get no real comments from Moxxie, Millie, and Luna about Blitzo’s behavior, even though they say they were following their boss to make sure he didn’t screw up his night with Stolas.

The episode could have had even more of an emotional gut punch if the other characters actually reacted or said something about how Blitzo is clearly not understanding what Stolas really wants, and is ruining his own mental health by refusing to admit he’s not okay. Blitzo doesn’t need to take the feedback well, but having his coworkers actually notice his destructive tendencies would have connected the plots and added to the dramatic nature of the final scene.

Season two of Helluva Boss has had its great moments, but the characters feel very disconnected from each other. Sometimes it’s as if the characters aren’t living in the same setting. It’s either the Blitzo and Stolas show, the Moxxie and Millie show, or the Fizz and Ozzy show. Even though the characters might be in the same episodes, they don’t really feel connected in a way that doesn’t serve the plot. Season one actually made the characters connect emotionally despite their dysfunctional dynamic.
